# Which ChatGPT plan should you pick: Free, Go, Plus or Pro?

Date: 2025-08-30 · Author: Robert Scales · https://guidetoartificialintelligence.com/en/learn/chatgpt-plan-pick-free-go-plus-pro/

**Answer:** Start with Free and upgrade only when you keep hitting a specific limit. Plus at $20 a month suits most regular users, Pro at $200 is for people who rely on the heaviest reasoning every day, and Go, at 399 rupees a month, is so far available only in India.

ChatGPT now has four personal plans, and since GPT-5 became the default model this month, every plan on OpenAI's pricing page, including the free tier, runs on GPT-5. The differences are about how much you can use it, which extra models and tools you get, and how fast replies come back. That makes the choice simpler than it looks: you are mostly paying for limits, not for a different kind of intelligence.

All prices below are the ones on OpenAI's pricing page this week, in US dollars unless noted. Prices in other currencies vary, and limits can change.

## The four plans at a glance

| | Free | Go | Plus | Pro |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | 399 rupees a month (about $4.60) | $20 a month | $200 a month |
| Where | Everywhere ChatGPT is offered | India only, for now | Everywhere | Everywhere |
| GPT-5 | Yes, with tight limits | About 10 times the free limits | Extended limits | Unlimited, within abuse rules |
| GPT-5 Thinking | One message a day | Not detailed by OpenAI at launch | Up to 3,000 a week when chosen by hand | Unlimited, plus GPT-5 pro |
| Extras | Web search, limited uploads, image creation and voice | More images, uploads and memory | ChatGPT agent, projects, tasks, video and screen sharing in voice, limited Sora video | All of Plus, more agent and Sora use, Codex research preview |

A few terms explained. **GPT-5 Thinking** is the slower mode that reasons before answering. **ChatGPT agent** is a mode in which ChatGPT takes actions for you to complete a task, rather than only answering. **Context window** is how much text the model can keep in view at once; the pricing page lists 16,000 tokens for Free, 32,000 for Plus and 128,000 for Pro for regular chat (a token is roughly three-quarters of a word).

## Free: the place to start

Free now gives access to GPT-5, web search and a little of almost everything. OpenAI's help page sets the free limit at up to 10 GPT-5 messages every five hours, after which chats move to a smaller model until the limit resets, plus one Thinking message per day. For occasional questions, homework help or writing a letter now and then, that is often enough.

## Go: a cheaper middle step, in India for now

On August 19, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Go in India at 399 rupees a month, compared with 1,999 rupees for Plus there, payable through India's UPI payment system. Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, said it gives ten times the free tier's messages, image generations and file uploads, and twice the memory. OpenAI said it would learn from India before offering Go elsewhere, so readers outside India cannot buy it yet.

## Plus: the default upgrade

Plus is for people who use ChatGPT most days and keep running into the free limits. Beyond higher limits, it adds the ability to pick GPT-5 Thinking yourself, ChatGPT agent, projects for organizing work, and older models such as GPT-4o for those who prefer them.

## Pro: for heavy, demanding use

Pro removes most limits and adds GPT-5 pro, a version that spends extra computing on the hardest questions. It makes sense for people whose work depends on long reasoning sessions every day, such as researchers, analysts or developers using the Codex coding agent. For most individuals, the jump from $20 to $200 is hard to justify.

## A worked way to decide

Use Free for two weeks and keep a simple log every time ChatGPT stops you: a limit message, a slow reply, a missing feature. Then read the log:

- **No limits hit, or only once or twice:** stay on Free.
- **In India, hitting message or image limits but rarely needing deep reasoning:** try Go.
- **Hitting limits several times a week, or needing Thinking, projects or ChatGPT agent:** choose Plus.
- **Hitting Plus limits on Thinking regularly, and the work pays for itself:** consider Pro.

> **Try it:** For the next week, write one line each time ChatGPT limits you: the date, what you were doing and the message you saw. On day seven, match your list to the four bullets above.

## When does a team plan make sense?

A shared plan makes sense when several people use ChatGPT for the same organization and the work involves information that should stay under the organization's control. OpenAI's pricing page lists this plan as Business (the plan its help pages have called Team) at $25 per user per month billed yearly, or $30 billed monthly.

The main difference is not the model but the controls. A Business workspace keeps chats in one place the organization manages, adds admin settings and single sign-on, and excludes the team's data from training by default. It also includes connectors to tools such as Google Drive, SharePoint and GitHub, so ChatGPT can draw on shared files.

A good rule of thumb: if two or more colleagues are each paying for Plus and pasting work documents into personal accounts, a team plan costs a little more per person and puts that work under clear rules. A solo freelancer, or a family sharing ideas for recipes, does not need it. Larger organizations with strict compliance needs can ask OpenAI's sales team about Enterprise, which adds more security and support.
